Years ago, family loyalty caused Fain Hauk to give up everything he loved: His military career. His planet. His fiancée. Even his name.
Now decades later, everything has changed. He’s built a new life out of the ashes of his old, and he’s vowed to never let anything threaten his loved ones again.
But when old enemies align themselves with new ones, he’s caught in the middle of a brutal war. And when fate throws his former fiancée back into his world and she has her own agenda that includes taking his head for what he did to her years ago, more than just his life is at stake. The fate of the Ichidian universe and that of his brothers-in-arms hangs in the balance. Winner take all.
It’s killed or be killed, and never has the battle been more fierce…
Or more fun.
"Stay with me, Stormy, In all the darkness of my life, you are the only light I've ever known."
The League has become one of favorite paranormal series after discovering it earlier this year. I have nine of the ten books in audiobook, with Born of Betrayal being the first hardcover in the series I have reviewed for the blog. Each book in the series focuses on a different couple and the war between the Sentella and The League. Born of Betrayal covers various degrees of betrayal but at its core is a second chance romance that unites one family and reunites another.
Sherrilyn Kenyon has easily become one of my favorite authors. She’s created a world that is unique and fascinating with its various sentient beings and their political and cultural differences. SK’s characters are always well written, fully fleshed out and relatable, making her an amazingly talented writer.
Born of Betrayal is a very different from the previous books in the series because it is Galene and Fain second chance. The prior books had a lot of interaction between the main the characters and the reader could follow their relationship and see them falling in love. Galene and Fain still are very much in love, so the story isn’t very romance heavy, but there is much that needs to be confessed and forgiven for the two to move forward and it is amazing to watch. We find out that Fain’s life wasn’t as easy or happy as we would have hoped because he was truly alone after Omira’s betrayal. It is important to note that while this is Galene and Fain's story, their reconciliation feels as if it's the secondary plot and the war is primary. Surprisingly, I didn't find this to be problematic at all. It made for a different reading experience and added to my overall enjoyment of the book.
A signature characteristic of Sherrilyn Kenyon novels is the redemption of the most hated characters, and she does this again with Jullien eton Anatole and Kyr Zemen. In Born of Night and Born of Defiance, Jullien's actions placed him high on my most hated character list. Kyr earned his place on my list in Born of Silence and Born of Fury. I'm not sure if this was something that I liked or hated, but it does set the groundwork for Born of Legend, and I can't wait to have that book in my hands.
Born of Betrayal is a must read for any fan of the League Series. Although the story is not romance heavy, it is action packed and emotional. Yes, there is a lot going on in this story, but that only added to my anticipation of what’s going to happen on the next page and at the end, the next book. I highly recommend this novel, this series, and anything written by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Happy Reading!!!
