Girl From Above Betrayal

TITLE: Girl From Above: Betrayal
SERIES: The 1000 Revolution #1
AUTHOR: Pippa DaCosta
GENRE: Sci-fi, Fantasy Romance

PUBLISHED: August 11th 2015

"My name is #1001, and I am not ready to die." I’d only just begun to live.
When Captain Caleb Shepperd is released from prison, all he wants to do is keep his head down and earn a living smuggling illegal cargo through the nine systems. So when a synth stows away on his ship, and brings with her a crap-ton of problems, including guilt-ridden secrets he thought he’d escaped, he’d prefer to toss her out the airlock. The problem is, she’s priceless tech, and he’s fresh out of credit.

#1001 is not meant to exist. Created for a single purpose, she has one simple order: to kill. But not everything is as it seems. Buried deep inside, she remembers... Remembers when she was human. And she remembers what Shepperd did to her. She’s not ready to die, but she is ready to kill.

WARNING: 18+ only. Adult content. Including sex, drug use, violence, & swearing.

Science Fiction is a genre that I don’t typically read, but I needed something different to get me out of my reader blues.  The cover piqued my interest, so I decided to request from Netgalley.  I immediately downloaded to my Kindle once I received the approval notification and began reading.  Girl From Above: Betrayal is the first in a three-book series by Pippa DaCosta and the first I've read by this author. Needless to say, I was amazingly surprised with how much I enjoyed reading this book.  Ms. DaCosta weaves together a well-written story that combines action, adventure and an unscrupulous cast of characters where betrayal is the only thing that they can be certain. The central question is who betrays who?

Girl From Above is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that doesn’t include a lot of romance. The story centers around Caleb, a smuggler that transport ill-got guns, drugs, etc. between the planets. But Caleb also has some missing history. The heroine is 1001 a synthetic robot created by the Chitec Corporation that is having some system malfunction. As a robot, 1001 should not have any human emotions but she goes through a series of them. DaCosta does a great job of getting the reading invested in theses characters. The reader knows there is some history between Cale and 1001 but how can that be when she’s a robot.

Girl From Above: Betrayal is only 179 pages. Don’t get me wrong there's a lot going on in these pages but when it ended I was mad! I wanted to know what happened next. When I initially opted to review this book I didn’t realize at first that this was a serial, so be warned. The second book is available now on Amazon, but my initial reaction was anger and disappointment when the story ended.

Even though I wanted to get away from romance for a few I was still looking for some sensuality. There is a lot of teasing between Cale and his first Captain, Fran, but nothing really comes of it.

Overall I enjoyed the story. I liked that it wasn’t too technical, but I wished it had been more sexual. If you like sci-fi/ space operas then this book is for you. If you are looking for something with more romance, this may not be the book for you as the romance is implied with almost non-existent sex.  If you're like me and looking for something outside of your usual genres, the Girl From Beyond: Betrayal is a very good alternative. Look for my review of Book 2 Escape in the coming weeks!

*I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
